The Course
The course was opened on 10th November,
1979. Two years later long time member Peter
Leaney finally convinced his 12 year old son Stephen to give golf a
go.
In 1983 Stephen won our Junior championship and went on to win
the Club championship in 1987. In the same year
he began his five year reign as West Coast Open champion in the
club's annual 54 hole tournament for men.
Stephen went on to a formidable amateur record captaining the state
team and representing Australia internationally.

On the professional circuit Stephen has continued his winning
ways accumulating nine titles on the European and Australasian
tours, including the 2002 German Masters. And in
2003 he ran second in the star studded, US Open. Below are some
brief hole by hole comments from Stephen Leaney about the
course.
The photos of each hole are
taken from the tee and approx 40m from the green.

1. 469 m Par
5
Probably the easiest hole on the course.
Straightaway par 5 that is reachable for the long hitter. Avoid the
fairway bunkers off the tee and the layup and a par is there for
the taking.

2. 349 m Par
4 Dogleg left
par 4 with a bunker on the left corner which will catch you if you try and take
it on. Play to the right with a 3 wood or long iron, leaving a mid to short iron
to to fairly flat green.

3. 151 m Par 3
Straight forward par 3, although
normally plays with a cross wind which can make club selection difficult.
Normally a 6 or 7 iron.

4. 366 m Par 4
Gentle dogleg to the left par 4, with one the
hardest to judge second shots on the course. Tall trees shelter the
green from the prevailing wind and club selection is always
difficult.

5. 355 m Par
4 Almost a right
angle dogleg to the left which tempts people to cut the corner. Don't be fooled,
play to right with a 3 wood leaving a mid to short iron to the green. Middle of
the green is always a smart play.

6. 169 m Par 3
The hardest par 3 on the course.
Can be anywhere from a 3 to 6 iron depending on the wind strength. Try and avoid
the bunkers and take a par anyway you can and escape to the next tee.

7. 363 m Par 4
One of only two dogleg right par 4's on
the course and probably the toughest fairway to hit. Try and stay left off the
tee to open up the green and avoid the gully on the left side of the putting
surface. Many good scores have come unstuck here.

8. 475 m Par 5
Usually downwind off the tee to a
generous fairway. Don't get too greedy with the second shot as the fairway
bunkers make it difficult to hit the green. The most undulating green on the
course, so try and stay under the hole.

9. 371 m Par 4
Normally plays into the wind and
requires a pin point drive to have any chance to make par. A swale in front of
the green can spoil the second shot and most people make bogey or worse here.

10. 395 m Par
4 A tough start to the backnine, although the tee shot is always downwind. Small green for
the length of the hole and not too many birdies made here. Make a
par here and you are ahead of the field.

11. 288 m Par 4
Don't be tempted to go for the green, the
trees are alot taller these days. Long iron or 3 wood to the corner
avoiding the out of bounds on the left. Straight forward pitch to a
difficult green to hole putts on.

12. 160 m Par 3
Good par 3 back into the
wind. A two level green that sits at a funny angle to the eye. Very difficult to
hit it on the back level when the pin is back there. Many a member has 3 putted
this green.

13. 450 m Par 5
Gentle dogleg left par 5
which the longer hitter can reach, although very rarely will they find the
putting surface in 2. Most members lay up short of the fairway bunker near the
green and have a comfortable wedge for their third. A two tiered green can cause
some problems though.

14. 372 m Par 4
One of the harder drives on the course
with the wind usually into and out of the left. Not a favourite for
the slicer. A mid iron second shot to a green that is hard to hit
it close on. A difficult hole, although it is not overly long.

15. 388 m Par
4 This hole plays
shorter than the 14th even though it is longer in yardage. Always
downwind off the tee to a generous fairway. Most members cannot
reach the fairway bunker on the left and the green is fairly accessable due to the front being open. A lot of members make a four
a plus on this hole.

16. 485 m Par 5
The longest hole on the
course and can cause of few headaches. Fairway bunkers on both sides to be
avoided off the tee and one for the second shot. The trees on the corner of the
dogleg have really grown making it tough to hit the green in two shots. Large
bunker in front of the green has been visited by nearly all members making par
difficult.

17. 153 m Par 3
Only a short downhill par 3
but a two tiered green and a left to right cross wind makes for a good
challenge. Although too many members get shots here and could spoil any close
side bet.

18. 401 m Par 4
Excellent finishing hole
normally into the teeth of the wind. Most members cannot reach in two, instead
trying to avoid the only lake on the course which is 60 metres from the green
and you guessed it, on the right hand side. Difficult left to right sloping
green which can ruin a good card.
